Kindergarten Registration Opens April 1 – Is Your Child Ready?
Furry Elementary Kindergarten Class

In the eyes of a 5-year-old child, the thought of going to Kindergarten may be anticipated as an exciting adventure or a scary journey into the unknown. For parents, it can be as equally daunting.

Teachers and administrators at Perkins Local School District want every child’s entry into school to be as simple and worry-free as possible.

The district will host an Open House at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, at Furry Elementary for families considering enrolling their children into Kindergarten in the 2019-2020 school year. Teachers and staff will be available to meet with parents and children, and give them a peek into what Kindergarten is all about and provide families with details about registration and screening, said Furry Elementary Principal Jennifer Long.

Open enrollment and registration for Perkins Schools’ preschool through 12th grade begins on April 1. Registration can be completed via the district website.

As families complete the online registration process, they will be able to choose a date to bring their child to Furry Elementary School for Kindergarten screening during the week of April 29 to May 3.

During the screening sessions, each child is assessed of their development in the areas of motor, concepts, language, self-help, and social development. Their hearing and vision also are screened by our district nurses. Staff will then meet with each family to share the results of those assessments.

Ohio law requires that every child attend Kindergarten. A child must be at least 5 years old to enter Kindergarten or 6 years old to enter first grade. Compulsory school age, or the minimum age in which a child must be enrolled in and attend school, is age 6. A family can choose to wait until a child turns 6 before enrolling the child in Kindergarten.  Children who turn 5 years old by Sept. 30 can enroll in Kindergarten at Perkins Local Schools.
